Flooding in Vernazza

On our last two trips to Italy we spent time in the Cinque Terre. Literally translated it means "five lands." It is on the Ligurian Sea and is made up of five towns: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso. The towns are connected by trails, rail and ferry. In 2008, we hiked between all five towns.

We took this picture in 2008 as we were hiking between Vernazza and Monterosso.

This year we stayed in Corniglia. One day we took the train to Vernazza, it only takes about five minutes. Here are some pictures of a pleasant afternoon we spent in Vernazza in June of this year.

Last week, flash floods hit the area. Several people were killed. Many of the streets in Vernazza and Monterosso were blocked by debris; in some areas up to the second floor of buildings. Here is a link to a slide show of the aftermath in Vernazza:

The first picture in the slide show appears to be the exact area where we ate supper that evening.

Another town, Monterosso, suffered serious damage as well. After the flooding the towns were not accessible by road or rail and the residents and tourists had to be evacuated by sea. Our hearts go out to the residents of the area and we hope and pray that the area will be restored as soon as possible.
